In a village near South Sudan’s capital, Juba, two women tentatively approach a small corrugated iron hut. They have come from the north to reclaim the land that was theirs before a two-decade conflict between Sudan and what is now South Sudan.

A man emerges, starts shouting and pulls a gun. They run, screaming down the road but stop abruptly mid-stride when a young man, who has been watching intently from across the street, shouts: “Cut!”

This is the set of one of South Sudan’s first homemade movies, written, directed and produced by the Woyee Film and Theatre Industry, a collective of young South Sudanese who are driving the country’s burgeoning arts scene.

South Sudan is the world’s newest country after its people voted to secede from the north in a referendum last January – and it is busy rebuilding its economy and its cultural identity in the wake of the civil war.

Ongina O Amos, one of the collective’s members, explains that “woyee” is a chant of praise in South Sudanese.

“If you say woyee it gives you courage to do what you want to do.”

That is what the collective is about, motivating South Sudanese to build up the country’s economy and its arts scene from within.

By working with local authorities in South Sudan to build and repair roads, WFP is helping create the transport infrastructure that the fertile new nation needs make the most of its potential for food production. WFP has committed to building 500km of roads that will of course make it easier to transport food assistance. But they will also help farmers bring their products to market.

Wave That Flag launched July 14, 2011, the same day South Sudan became a United Nations member state. Before any changes were made to the homepage flag map, South Sudan had to be confirmed by the U.N.

Article 6 of the Constitution of Flagging states, The Flag in question must be from a Sovereign State. In other words, they are completely independent and are not under any other nations authority/rule. When it comes to claiming captured flags, the line must be drawn somewhere. South Sudan would become completely independent eventually, but Atlas Al and The Hunger waited until it was official.

When media broke the news of the worlds newest country, Wave That Flag programmers and graphic designers halted work on version 2.0 to make adjustments to Sudan and South Sudan flag maps. In response to South Sudans independence, The Hunger said, We needed to accommodate members as quickly as possible who may have captured their South Sudanese flag already.

South Sudan’s Yida refugee camp was bombed earlier this week, leaving at least twelve people dead. Following the attack, most aid workers pulled out of the camp, and the people left behind do not know where they will get medicines from. The camp, located on the border with Sudan, is also facing critical water shortages. Khartoum denies US accusations that the north carried out the attack, just as UN food aid was being delivered. Al Jazeera’s Anna Cavell reports from Yida.
